Fantastic Burning Jazz
The Lonnie Leibowitz Trio show was one of
those experiences that left me
in awe at the
end of the night. The players, Lonnie Leibowitz
on piano, Robert
Kopec on the bass and Don
Devine on drums, as musicians are truly in a
league
of there own. Each one showing such
incredible talent in both their playing
and
improvisational skills.
The two sets, consisted mostly of original
compositions by Leibowitz, blended
the melodic
chordal movements of the likes of Michelle Camilo
and Thelonious
Monk, with the intensity of Chick
Corea's Acoustic Band. Well crafted pieces
showing the truest nature of improvisational jazz and composition stylistic
of a poet viewing a sunset for the first time after a great storm.
Lonnie's piano set the mood for the night with his intricate chordal changes and melodic movements growing from a slow simple passage to a complex blazing stream of notes and chords that grew like a wave. Bassist Robert Kopec took hold of that groove and would not let go. Setting a fire to these brilliant compositions that only a few player alive could ever do. Devine on traps worked these pieces as like a true pro . His time and meter unmoving through all the swells, pushing and pulling as these demanding compositions require.
Les' take- A brilliant performance by some of this areas greatist jazz players.
